How To Spot Phishing Scams

Introduction:

Many spammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated these days.  They are sending out emails such as “Your Password is going to expire”, Payment was paid, DocuSign etc.  Always put your mouse over the links and check the URL it’s going to.

If it’s a suspicious link, do not click on it.

See the attached image as an example.

Always make sure the domain is https://something.dropbox.com, not https://dropbox.com.somethingelse.com.

That would be a spoof site, because somethingelse.com is the fake site.

Other examples:

Payment remittance is a big one. A scammer will send an email that appears to be from your boss, but in reality, it’s from a scammer.

They will send this out about 4:30 PM on a Friday, asking you to send a payment to a fake company quickly. I’ve seen companies fall for this and lose over $10,000.

Employee training is the key to spotting these fakes.

These spammers can make it appear as though it’s coming from you, Boss.  How do they get that info?  Social Media like LinkedIn.  They can examine your entire organization.

Please forward this to all your colleagues, including those outside your organization. They will thank you for it.
